On a Friday night in a city heralded as 'Europe's Capital of Psychedelia' by the Quietus, Noiserocker walked past the clubbers and drug pushers in Liverpool's Concert Square to smaller venue, where three bands were preparing something truly unique.
First up are Lancaster's Three Dimensional Tanx. As an out-of-town act, opening the show to the smallest crowd of the night, they don't play it like. They bring energy and conviction in their performance, forcing post-punk-garage-rock energy with the laces of warped keyboard blips and swirling noise. Sonics meets Stooges falls in love with 13th Floor Elevators and has a kid with Brian Jonestown Massacre type of vibe, Mello Mello's stage seems incapable of containing them.
FFO: The Sonics, The Stooges, The Velvet Underground, Haircuts

Next up are Mind Mountain, the only local act of the night, and It's obvious they have a lot of friends here. As the the lo-fi groove of the riffs start to rattle the foundations of the building, the room entirely fills up. This suddenly feels like a headline set. like J Macis's Witch playing in a black hole, the near endless tunes continue to grow and change, putting everyone in attendance into trance. With break's where the guitars end and the keyboards take over, this is a band who at such an early stage have written some the best music to come out of the city in a long time. The intricacy of the riffs is impressive to watch, and fingers fly up and down the neck of their guitars. I still feel both impressed and sympathy for the drummer, who in any other band would have a minute to recover after every three minute song. Not here. The songs don't end, and the drums don't stop. I found a new favorite band.
FFO: Earthless, Witch, 'Phosophene Dream Era' The Black Angels, Melting your Mind

Finally it's time for the The Cosmic Dead, as the warlord-esque man of a guitarist speaks out the crowd, 'we've driven all the way from Glasgow' this isn't a show they intend to take lightly. Right from the word go a mess of hair, flying instruments and of course noise, comes buzzing from the stage. With a guitarist equally dividing his time for the first ten minutes between riffs and tambourine solos, The Cosmic Dead's songs go beyond ear pound psych, and into carefully crafted tunes with the one goal to entrance and ensnare the audience. It's hard to look away, and demands the attention of the crowd, between the vocoded layers, ear splitting keyboard sound, reverb, fuzz, echo and noise the crowd get's lost in the cosmic nod. Their recorded tracks do not do them justice, next time The Cosmic Dead are in town, go.
FFO: White Hills, Carlton Melton, The Cult of Dom Keller, Outer-Space-Esque-Noise, Beards
